I was not holding out a lot of hope for this since I was looking for something to quickly slice those smaller tomatoes and that seemed like it was asking a lot. Anything beats slicing multiple 2 inch tomatoes with a knife but this thing worked great. There is a bit of a technique to it--place the tomato in the holder, flip it over while maintaining slight pressure, then snap the two sides together over your chosen destination. This addresses the occasional "juicy" tomato and keeps it from squirting all over the counter (and your face). Ask me how I know. Only used on tomatoes so far but the blades seem sharp enough to handle firmer stuff too.
