This alginate was purchased for a full head fill. Since we have no experience with the product, we followed the instructions on the packaging. The manual states that "measurement by weight is much more accurate than measurement by volume". We decided to follow their recommendations: carefully weigh the water and powder, mix according to the instructions, but to no avail. The mixture was lumpy and solidified very quickly. We tried this method again on a smaller object with the same results. After re-reading the instructions, we decided to try mixing by volume at a 1:1 ratio. Much easier. Worked great! Mixed to a fairly smooth consistency, it's easy to apply, giving us plenty of time to apply a coat of alginate all over the head. The color change was a big help. It pays to be prepared and act quickly. We were able to fill the mold with cast material, but had to destroy it to remove the head. I'm not sure if this alginate mold will survive a second cast. It quickly becomes hard and brittle due to moisture loss. Although we wasted most of that 1 pound sack, it could easily be fitted into two full head molds.
