Review on John Boos CHY-R02 Cherry Wood Cutting Board | 24" X 18" Reversible & Edge Grain by Alexander Chavis

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Very Heavy Nice Maple Cutting board with serious flaw.

This board is HUGE and made of very nice Hard Rock Maple. It is so big I didn't realize I really didn't have a place to put it when I got it in. It wouldn't fit under my cabinets, it wouldn't fit on my counter standing up on it's edge because of the cabinet clearance was only 17.5 inches, so I had to store it on top of the fridge (not ideal). This thing is heavy so I would suggest having a place to put it and not move if it possible. One thing about this board is the first time you get it wet the little fibers in the wood will stand up a little, this should be a finish the factory provides but you can easily fix this yourself. Simply wait until the board dries and take some 180 or 240 grit sandpaper and lightly sane the whole board. This will prevent the fibers from raising up and the board will be as smooth as glass from then on.Now the bad, as you can see in the pictures the craftsmanship is very lacking. This board started coming apart on one of the glue seams not long after I got it. It was a small place at first but you can see how large it became at the end. I bought this board in May of 2021 and these pictures were taken January 5, 2022.There is a one year warranty but they make you ship the product to them and you are at their mercy on whether or not they determine you get a replacement. So more then likely they would not replace anyone's board at all, even though you can clearly see this was the result of not enough glue in the joint of this board.I ended up fixing this board myself since I make cutting boards locally. I ripped down the glue seam (clearly not enough glue applied when constructed), and then I re-glued the board back together. At this point I went ahead and ripped a half inch off each side and that allowed me to store this on my counter top under my cabinets.I would recommend buying another brand because this was not a "care" issue, this was a manufacturer defect and for most people you will either have to chance their warranty, fix it yourself if you have the tools, or have someone else fix it.
