I've been using Time pedals for 18 years, mostly XC versions. Over the past few years I have been dissatisfied with the durability of my XC 8, 6 and 12 pedals and have broken 3 pairs from rockfalls. I mainly ride trail bikes which tend to get a lot more rock chips than my XC bikes with higher bottom brackets. I've been using MX8 models for about a year, they're blast proof in terms of durability, but the large platform area causes a lot of rock chips on my trail/enduro bikes. The Special 8s certainly result in fewer hits, but have a platform that should provide solid protection for the pedal body. The Special 8s are a great pedal, they should take less stone chips but then again I've only ridden them about 120 miles so far. I'm a serious racer, I ride 4000 mountain miles a year and I'm on the race team. A solid buy if you're not a weight lover, the Times clears mud and snow MUCH better than SPD style pedals. Don't worry about the spinners, they can't take rock chips at all. Hope that helps.
