Review on Spectre Performance Air Intake Kit for 2012-2019 TOYOTA Tundra (SPE-9055): Enhancing Horsepower and Torque with High Performance Design by Ruben Saunders

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I wanted to bring it back a bit and I'd like a better engine sound

To set the stage I have a 2015 Toyota Tundra Platinum 4x4 5.7L. In February I added a 2.5" front flat kit and 295/65/20 Nitto Ridge Grappler All Terrain tires. My average consumption of 16.8 mpg became 13.8 mpg. better engine sound. After researching I settled on the Spectre. Price was the main consideration as my main goal was performance, specifically fuel economy. The equipment was well packed after unpacking to protect the components. I make my own brakes, etc.), but I wouldn't call it my passion either. In my career, I work on a computer all day and work with spreadsheets for reference. Instructions are included listing all required tools by size. This turned out to be 99% true. (I didn't need the 8" extension which was good since I don't have one. The 4" extension worked fine). The guide was good. I would suggest reading each sentence twice to get the meaning. The photos are black and white, which isn't perfect, but they had enough contrast that I could see what was going on. I really wish there was a parts list with a picture and title in the instructions. I've never modified an air intake so it took me a while to figure out some of the correct names. A previous review mentioned the complexity of the rear bolt on the heat shield. I'll admit it wasn't particularly easy, but I managed it anyway. I don't think the heat shield is reliable without it so I struggled with it for 5 minutes to get it ready. If you can't fit that bolt, I think you probably shouldn't be working on a car like this. In general, I slowly and slowly completed the work in 1.5 hours plus or minus 10 minutes. In terms of results, I like how it looks under the hood. I like how it sounds. I've got about 600 miles on it now, about a third city and 2/3 on the freeway. It feels like my truck can downshift earlier on the acceleration curve. It also feels a little more responsive when you step on the accelerator to overtake from 40mph to 60mph. In terms of fuel economy, I saw limited improvement here. As mentioned above, I dropped to 13.8mpg. My current fuel economy calculations show I'm getting around 14.1mpg. That's less than I was hoping for. It will take me longer to recoup the CAI costs than I expected. In general I like the product. I wouldn't buy it alone if fuel economy is ALL you want. But if, like most, you want good looks under the hood and a raspy purr under acceleration, this is for you.
