Review on 🔄 Reusable Mold Making with ComposiMold: 3lbs Versatile Solution by Jennifer Roberts

Very cool stuff!

I bought this gel to make molds for art projects. I am very tired of making disposable molds from expensive silicone mold systems. I received the "used" gel in a lump, not as shown in the photos. I suspect someone bought it, tried it and sent it back - poured into a plastic bag. Anyway, I melted it down and converted it into muffin cups so it would be easier to use later. I also did a test cast. The item I threw came out fine. I wouldn't say the detail was perfect, the gel is a bit soft to capture and reshape fine detail. But the shape is normal shaped. As with any molding process, undercuts are not well received by the gel. For complex models it is better to cast from 2 parts. I would recommend it for proofreading concept molds before spending big bucks on silicone mold materials. Notes: Obtaining a bubble-free impression is somewhat difficult without using a vacuum chamber. Next time I will use the vacuum phase. If you plan to cast larger molds, you should provide a rigid base to keep the mold from deforming. The manufacturer has some helpful instructional videos covering this and some other intricacies of gel casting. A really nice added benefit of this product is that you can use it as a gel printing plate! This is the same material that gel sheets are made from. Simply melt according to the manufacturer's directions and pour into a flat-bottomed casserole dish. Let it dry and you've got a gel plate to print monotypes with until the cows come home! So if you or anyone else in the house wants to try gel plate printing (a super fun freeform painting technique, check out YouTube for more), this stuff can do double duty. Only use acrylic paints for printing - oil paints can change the consistency of the gel over time.

Pros
  • Used, with ComponiMold filter. Works like new but is not food safe.
Cons
  • Legacy Model
