My old gauge was so inaccurate and difficult to use. It took some experimentation with it to get the right depth. It has choices for 1/2", 1" and 1 1/2". If you pick the wrong one the center beam doesn't light up. Once I set it to 1" it was awesome. It has a bar that lights up for the left and right edges of the tip, as well as a dot in the center to indicate exact center. Works perfectly! It has other features for aligning or locating wires or metal pins, but I haven't experimented with that yet. I'm ordering a second one to give to my neighbor who is doing a great job of helping me. He had the same old (inaccurate) model as me, so I'm sure he'll like it too.
