I read a lot of reviews about radios. I learned how they work and decided what type is (FRS vs. GMRS) and decided that FRS would work fine for my needs. I also made notes about what frequency to stay on to be legal. I needed a basic two-way radio for an 800-mile, two-car trip to college to keep in touch. Thought it would be easier and safer than texting on the phone or using an app on the phone which still depends on the tower service. I was right about how easy and safe it was to use. The distance between the cars was just over 1/4 mile, if we were more it was either no reception or very poor reception. I was expecting it to be a bit bigger on a straight road, but it was enough. Knowing that range, we tried to stay within that range, and it worked out well. I liked how easy it was to grab the walkie talkie and contact another car. Don't wake up my phone, don't look at the phone while driving. Just pick up the microphone, turn it on and speak. It worked well since I was alone in the car. We were able to quickly alert you to lane changes due to traffic issues, upcoming exits, etc. It was so easy and safe! Battery life was very good. We used it on the go for 12 hours on a single charge and it still showed a bar. We didn't play around with the radio, we just used it for what we needed. So if your kid plays on it, it won't last as long. Once battery life dropped to one bar, there was a little more noise in the transmission. I found the battery life to be very good and I liked the feature of being able to plug it into the car phone charger if needed as it uses the same. I chose the FRS frequency and sub frequency and never had to change them. I've never heard anyone on this channel before. As long as we were within 1/4 mile or so the voice was very clear. We drove through several major cities on the interstate throughout the trip and still haven't heard from anyone else. In terms of durability, I've dropped it on concrete once and it doesn't even look like it's been dropped. No marks or anything and it works great. I am very happy with this purchase and since having them on sale I feel that they are more than worth what I paid for. We can use it for other purposes but just on my commute to and from uni are they worth the price. Must have features for me: 1. Small and compact size 2. Ability to charge phone style in my car 3. FRS frequencies 4 , Rechargeable batteries but normal batteries can be put in if needed 5. Decent range (with my realistic Expectations )
