Better than Canson XL but not enough to justify the price difference

Thought I'd like Canson paper . I'm poor, it's cheap. The match is made in heaven, right? I would love to, but this is the third type of paper I've bought from the Canson brand and it will be the last. Canson XL watercolor paper is pretty bad, but it has its uses (brush strokes, scraps of paper, color swatches and blending) so it's a great purchase as practice paper so I figured it should be a real step up. Unfortunately, this isn't enough to justify the price difference between the Canson Montval and XL. The paper quality seems a little better for Montval, but the difference isn't worth it to me. If the paper is not 100% cotton, you should still not make finished products on it. However, for the same price, I can get an 8.5 x 11 100% cotton Strathmore Mixed Media Pad, so not only can I do all of the above, but I can practice wet-on-wet painting and get better results . . to what they should be. I couldn't work effectively wet-on-wet with this paper, and it's more expensive as it's 10 sheets smaller than XL watercolor books of the same size. I am currently using the Montval Color Mixing Chart Notebook and it is excellent for this purpose. The other Canson book I bought was a Bristol paper notebook and while it was fine I wouldn't buy it again either (but it's not so much about my needs as it is about problems with the paper even).
