This is a poor quality product. This only lasted about a week and a half before the lid failed and stopped working. It probably looked better on paper than in practice. We put this bin in the kitchen and during that time it has been used a lot. (Family of 4). The problem lies in the mechanics of the movement of the lid. The chain mechanism is actually nothing more than small plastic beads that form around a piece of string. These small plastic balls are then inserted into the holes around the gear. When the lid is triggered, the balls are pulled in one direction or the other, turning the gear to open or close the lid. In our situation, the thread broke between two beads, rendering the lid unusable. We attempted to swap out the jar for another model with a different lid but were told this was not possible and the lid could be replaced with ours. We had little faith that the new lid would last longer, so we just threw the entire bin away and went back to the original bin.
