Mediocre at best: Print server

I originally bought this unit for its print server capabilities. The first one I bought must have been returned by someone as the password wasn't what it should have been by default. Also, the reset button on the device didn't reset the factory settings as described in the documentation. I called tech support and they waited for me for an hour and a half! Finally, the tech showed me how to reset the passcode (by holding the reset button, unplugging the device, waiting 20 seconds, plugging it back in, holding the reset button with a pencil the whole time, then releasing). After this test I was able to get the PrintServer part to work but it wouldn't connect to my ISP (Bellsouth FastAccess). After several attempts I finally exchanged this device for an identical device which connected to my ISP on the first try. This time the print server part only worked 1 time out of 5 and that was after restarting the device and my PCs! I reinstalled a D-Link DI-704 model that doesn't have a print server and it works like clockwork (I've had it for a year now). It also has an on/off switch, which is handy if you need to restart it, you don't have to turn anything off, just flip the switch. When it comes to printing, it's MUCH more reliable to just connect the printer directly to an always-on server and share it. On the client computer, just select the network printer and point to the server and it will work 100%. But the D-Link 704P wasn't reliable enough for me.

Pros
  • Works with any Ethernet cable/DSL service
Cons
  • I'll write later
