Review on LG 34WK95U W 34 Class UltraWide 5120x2160p 21:9 Monitor by Chris Lewis

Excellent new Mac Studio partner

For my Mac Studio, I wanted a little more screen real estate as I often work with two apps side by side. After discussing the possibility of using two separate 27 inch monitors side by side, I decided to investigate an "ultrawide" monitor. They're easy to find, but not in 4k resolution (or better) like this LG. 4k = 3840 x 2160 and 5k = 5120 x 2880 vertically. The key point is that the monitor's physical display size is the same height as the 27-inch 4k monitor. So a diagonal of 34 inches only extends the horizontal. You do NOT want to stretch the same number of horizontal 4k pixels (3840), so just increase them to 5k (5120) horizontally. The end result is an ultra-wide monitor with mathematically correct scaling. A standard 1080p monitor is 1920 x 1080. Double that vertically and horizontally and you get 4k 3840 x 2160. However, all text on the screen is half the size. as it was at 1080p. So Apple uses scaling. On screen, it takes a 1080p pixel and doubles its size both vertically and horizontally. So what was one pixel is now rendered as a 2 x 2 pixel square. This 1:2 scaling factor makes text look like 1920x1080 on a 3840x2160 monitor. However, since 1 pixel is now equal to 4 (2 x 2), it looks a lot sharper. The 27 inch monitor looks good as it has 163 pixels per inch. If you put 4K on a 32-inch monitor, the resolution drops to 137 pixels per inch. So using a bigger monitor than 27 inch monitor for 4k is not good for picture quality. LG has developed a 34-inch monitor that supports a resolution of 163 pixels per inch. The physical height of the monitors remains the same as their 27 inches with the same 2160 pixel count, but instead the horizontal dimension is physically stretched and the resolution is increased from 4k (3840) to 5k (5120). This saves 163 PPI and a perfect 1:2 zoom ratio.
