Review on LG 34WK95U W 34 Class UltraWide 5120x2160p 21:9 Monitor by Andy Wilson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works with MacBook Pro 15 " i9 Radeon Pro 560X Mojave 10.14.3 10.14.3 (updated) 2018

Update: This monitor does not work well with Catalina. Terrible resolution and currently no patches from Apple or LGI can confirm LG 34" 5k/2k over USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) works with 2018 15" MacBook Pro on Mojave. There have been many reports of compatibility issues; Since it works for me, I suspect the latest Mojave patch fixed the compatibility issues. I'll be back in a few weeks for a more complete review, but it definitely works and first impressions are good. Update - have been using LG 5k2k for about a week now and still think it's a 5 star monitor. The resolution is high enough to give you the feel of a retina display. I'm running this in sRGB mode on a monitor with an Apple RGB Display profile, and the colors match the MacBook Pro's Retina display very closely (see 2nd photo). I'm using a screen resolution of 3360 x 1417, which I find to be a good balance between screen size and resolution. The monitor features are impressive and useful. The ambient light sensor at the top of the monitor is great as it automatically adjusts the display's brightness to changing conditions throughout the day. Night shift mode is supported, which I like for the same reason I use it on my Mac. So far, I've had no trouble shaking hands between a MacBook Pro and a monitor using the included USB-C to Thunderbolt 3 cable (actually a good cable that sells for around $65). My Mac gets 85W of power and the USB-C port also allows you to use the USB ports on the back of the monitor. I don't use monitor speakers, so I can't comment on this feature. wide enough that I can open 3 windows which are actually big enough to be functional (I use magnet for window positioning although the monitor comes with its own software for the same purpose). In my opinion, this monitor excels in color matching. I had Dell (Dell U2713HM with 27" screen), ASUS (ASUS 32" 4K Ultra HD ProArt Professional Monitor [PA328Q] IPS), ACER and now LG. Other monitors were a noticeably different color, and even with constant exposure, the Retina display was difficult to get close to. The fact that both are essentially the same helps with video and photo editing. I had no trouble adjusting it or making it stable. For example, the fact that the back of this monitor is white, which suits my working environment better. Overall a great monitor for a MacBook Pro. I'm glad the "handshake" issues have been resolved.
