I have tried ramps for my dogs before but they always felt weak and cramped and my dogs were afraid to use them. I really like the ability to convert the ramp into steps and my dog will use it. He is an 80 lb lab blender with knee arthritis and some near vision issues. I think it's easier for him to see the steps ahead than the ramp. He learned how to use it in just a few training sessions, and now he can get in and out of the tailgate without straining his legs. The only downside is that the ramp is heavier than most (because it's better built) and requires a bit of maneuvering to get on and off. I slide it in the back seat, folded for storage but with steps to make it quicker and easier to use. If I needed more room for people or "things" in the back seat, I'd have to fold the steps completely, which takes a little more work. I think that over time I'll get rid of the routine and it won't seem like a big routine. Overall a great product - durable, well made and functional. worth your money!
