Not for a normal aquarium but more for a nano tank, much better than any Ecotech or AI pump. I've tried 3 different pumps and they all say they're very "unobtrusive". They are perfect to place anywhere. They aren't multidirectional, but you don't need pumps in a nano aquarium to be that way. You just have to make sure the water is circulating, especially near the bottom. In addition, they were so quiet that I had to use my pointer to see if it actually worked. The downside of the controller is that it's huge, looks small but is about 4" x 6". You can't manually control the head either, you can only control the 5 times and how it works, but you can't control how long those settings are. In general, for me it is not as important as the size of the wavemaker. If I had a big 40 liter tank I wouldn't buy them.
