Turns out I needed it!

I thought I could fit gaskets without this tool. I would just be careful and take my time tapping it slowly and evenly. But it's really not that easy! I wasted a lot of time and almost ruined a new seal before I gave up and posted this. Then I applied the fillings in about a minute!
