Finally Fix That Damn Oil Leak

Stop This Jeep From Blowing Oil - Replace That Crankshaft. You can see the oil is around the valve cover. This little gadget and its companion bushing (Dorman HELP! 42344 PCV Valve Grommet) is a headache for the Jeep Wrangler. Or at least a 2003 4L Wrangler. The valve cover is a little tricky to take off, but just take a razor blade and gently slit the old bushing or you'll cut off most of your finger. You can then use your superhuman strength to carefully pull the elbow out because if it breaks and enters the valve cover, you could be in trouble. I've used some channel blocking cautiously, but it's a chore that seems like it should be easier than it actually is. That's why it spits out oil when it fails - it has to be glued to the valve cover like glue. The new one gets in easier if you smear it with a large piece of petroleum jelly. Check out "Jeep Wrangler for PCV" on Youtube. and you'll get some ideas on how to handle this featherweight job. It's not actually a PCV "valve" like some other engines, but it works in a similar way and all tend to fail while the outside appears fine (but surrounded by an oily valve cover). There are two of them, and you can tell which - or maybe both - appear to be leaks. One is on the front of the valve cover and is easy to get to, and the other is of course on the opposite end of the valve cover, requiring you to climb into the engine bay and get to it.
