No zinc. Without lead?

What is actually used to dye rope and what is used to tan leather? I had the same reaction as the previous reviewer about the smell. How to tan smelly skin? I checked the Penn Plax website and the internet and could not find any information other than zinc and lead information. If I knew what was used for the details I might feel better about giving them to my bird, but I haven't had the courage yet.
