Review on High Performance MSI Z390-A PRO Motherboard for Intel 8th and 9th Gen with M.2 USB 3.1 Gen 2 DDR4 HDMI DP CFX Dual Gigabit LAN ATX Z390 Gaming by Lyle Stepp

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Would have been a 5 star rating

had it not been for the fact that mine came without the M2 screw that comes with the rack. The rack piece came screwed on, but the small screw that fits into this rack (thus securing the nano SSD in place) didn't hold. Now I'm stuck trying to find a place to buy a replacement screw instead of fully assembling my new computer. Update: I ended up finding 3 sets of M2 screws so I could continue building the computer. Now I'm stuck on the fact that the computer only boots when I put 1 RAM stick in the 3rd slot. The manual for this board says I should put the sticks in the 2nd and 4th slots first, but when I do that it never boots. For testing purposes, I tried every placement combination with 2 sticks, as well as using the stick in any slot. It only boots when the flash drive is inserted into the 3rd slot. (each of the sticks works at this moment). After booting, I'm immediately greeted with a "RAM in suboptimal slot" message, which recommends putting it in the 2nd and 4th slots first. Update: It's been a while since my last update. After testing the RAM on another computer and making sure it was working, I contacted MSI customer service and explained the situation. They wanted me to get another RAM to test on the failed board (which I didn't have and didn't want to spend more money) and wanted me to do a whole bunch of other things, test each component individually, try different BIOS updates and other steps that seemed unnecessary. Also, they wanted me to pay to send them the damn thing, so I'm not sure what the point of promoting a product with a guarantee. Luckily, while MSI's customer support was slow and tedious, Revain was exemplary. I explained that the item was defective and I was immediately given the option to return the defective board and they sent me a replacement which arrived within 48 hours. The breadboard worked perfectly (and the breadboard even came with an M2 screw!). I'm increasing the rating to 3 stars, subtracting 1 star for the headache and hassle caused by the faulty board and leaving another 1 star for customer service from MSI itself. I understand that they have a lot of troubleshooting on their side have to do it, but if the product is under warranty, the process should be smooth and quick, and the customer shouldn't be charged for sending the item in for repair. To clarify, the board itself is exceptional (if you can get a working one). If anyone is having similar or different issues and thinks MSI's customer service is proving difficult, I recommend contacting Amazon, they did the right thing. me quickly and painlessly.
