I used to pre-drill holes with an 1/8" bit when I was going to cut in metal doors and Phillips tends to cut out the Phillips head. I used them for outdoor weather to prevent rust. Although they were supposed to be self-tapping screws but wanted a Phillips head screwdriver, most people had a Phillips head screwdriver when the door needed painting. Torx or square drive steel doors drill better and the head doesn't come off as easily. A lot of people don't have a torx or square head screwdriver and I wanted people who paint to have easy access to them so they could remove the marks for painting.
