It was poorly designed. The cable from the cigarette lighter plugs into a connector attached to the IC (integrated circuit) board inside the device. A design flaw is that the case doesn't hold the socks securely in place, meaning that every time the device slides off the dash, the soldered connection to the IC board takes the brunt of the entire device's injury, including the weight of the GPS . (and in my case a weighted dash mount as I refuse to tape it to the windshield). Eventually the connection will drop and you will have to buy a replacement.
