Works right out of the box. However, my complex setup required a lot of trial and error to get going. The problem was not in the splitter, but in the settings of the output device. Output 1 goes to the TV, but through an AVR home theater device, and output 2 goes to the scaler, then to the recorder, then to my computer. So I had to adjust the scaler settings to allow my recording device to accept full 5.1 audio. After that was clarified, everything was perfect. I have full 5.1 audio and 720p or 1080i video on both outputs. The splitter is set to Auto and I used high quality, high speed HDMI 1.4 cables. The red LED on the splitter is a bit bright, but if that's important you can hide it behind devices to block the light or cover it with tape. I tried another splitter from a different manufacturer and it didn't work in the same configuration, so I was very happy I found this one and ended up getting it working. The support team was excellent and contacted me when I asked for a refund. They provided helpful tips that eventually gave me the idea to try it and it worked. So I kept the device and didn't need a refund. Maybe I'll even get a second one as a reserve/backup
