Bought these on Verifone's recommendation to reduce bad/false read errors on customers' chip cards. I found that my employer (a large bulk retailer) reported that we had monthly reserve rates in excess of 2.5% on their cards, so we performed this rather exhaustive exercise to see how we were reporting overall backup rates our MX915 units can lower. Verifone suggested that simply cleaning the chip reader might improve performance, so we bought a box and ran it through a store that has about 30 MX915s. We monitored rates daily and saw no real improvement in reducing backups. We also didn't find much dirt or grime removed. EMI slots on pinpads usually face down, and gravity probably won't bring the crap back up unless the loyalty cards are encrusted with dirt, debris, or something else. In fact they do a lot, I can't give them much credit. Your best choice for redundancy is to either A) replace the entire pinpad with a new block with a new (or) card reader, B) send them in for a replacement chip reader, and/or C) tweak the pinpad configuration to customers to allow a chip read to be repeated more than once to increase the likelihood of a good contact and read.
