The paper is very rough, uneven and rough! It's pretty heavy paper, but it's NOT good quality paper! This material makes detailed (or simply "beautiful") drawing or sketching difficult. For reference, I use 0.8mm Uni-Ball (black and other colors) and Ultra-Fine Point Sharpie markers (many colors). , and both will shine through AT LEAST to the bottom of the current page! So don't expect the back to look clean (or maybe even paintable, etc.). But more often than not, those fairly ordinary/everyday/household pencils leave a mark on the next page. But that's the limit of all the see-throughs I've seen (but please note that I don't paint or use watercolors or any other art media than those listed). To be honest, I think overall you're better off investing a few bucks more in a decent sketchbook with better quality, smoother paper. These notebooks can be used, but they are not intended for artistic purposes: regular straight lines look wavy in them!
