I love this ceramic sharpening stone. So this stone came from Japan and delivery takes some time. I knew about this before the deal but decided I didn't need to do it beforehand so the price was right for me. Actually it came a week earlier than expected so all is good. Now let's get to the stone. It appears to be a real 12000 grit whetstone. It's a waterstone but with this grit and quality you don't really need to soak it and you can use it as a splash and go but I don't mind putting it (and other sandstones) in a container of water and leaving them Leave on for 15 minutes while I prep other items for sanding. I use it as a finishing stone for straight razors and some knives (mainly to bring out the high gloss finish on knives). It came out pretty flat, but make sure you flatten the rocks before using them (it's important). either with a similar sharpening stone or a leveling stone. I probably don't need to mention this because if you're reading a review of a 12000 stone from Japan, you probably already know how to sharpen, or are learning and will do it right. If you are reading this and are just looking for a stone to sharpen tools or kitchen knives then you know that the finer the grit the better. then this is not the right stone for you. I like the packaging and the plastic case and also the holder for the stone when sharpening. I don't use it that way, however, simply because I have a setup that doesn't require it. Great stone, grit rating seems reasonable (you will find some below 10,000+ that are far from that level but this one seems right). With proper use, I expect this stone to last for years and years and years. Perfect.
