Bought this set for my girlfriend to replace the crappy knives she had. She wanted me to buy a new set so she could get my old kitchen knives. Great knife set for the money. The reason they cannot be washed in the dishwasher or left in water is that they are made from high carbon stainless steel. This keeps the blades sharper longer, so you don't have to sharpen them as often as dishwasher-safe blades. The steak knives are a bit flimsy compared to the other knives in the set, but the main knives are great! If you haven't guessed. I'm a knifeman!
