Review on Enhanced Magellan RoadMate 3000T Portable GPS Navigator with 3.5-Inch Display by Troy Henkhaus

excellent value for money, the best among portable GPS modules

The main reason I bought this GPS is that it comes with a Sirf III chip. This is the latest GPS chip on the market that makes reception much easier even in a crowded city. The hype is true because I can even get a reception at my house. This is one of the cheapest devices from major GPS companies (Garmin, Magellan, Tomtom) that have this chip. I only received this device today but felt I should comment as some are for silly reasons. The interface is clear, the screen is the brightest I've seen in a store, and while it's larger than the Garmin Nuvi, it still fits in my purse and costs a lot less. I also looked at the Roadmate 2000 but it loaded fewer POIs. However, if that's not important to you, it's worth considering as it's cheaper, costing less than 3000. None of these support text-to-speech (aka "Tell Me Where"), which allows the device to say the street name instead. only where. I think that would be a nice feature, but you're definitely paying extra for a model that has it, and I've heard that the names on devices with this feature can be pretty illegible at times. I updated the firmware on the Magellan website and it was very easy. I had a routing error today but it was related to the mapping software and not the device. I think the same would happen with any GPS device. It would be nice if a power pack was included in addition to the car adapter. The windshield mount supplied with the device differs from the illustration in the user manual/quick start guide. If this happens to you, be aware that the center of the mount will bend. I didn't get it at first and the damn unit was pointing down instead of perpendicular to the dash.

Pros
  • Useful for more than intended purpose
Cons
  • Negative impression
