Review on Faber Castell 48-Color Premium Color Pencils by Nicole Mcleod

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Too bad I didn't find these first ones

This may be an "average" quality pencil, but it's good. (Thanks to those who create the coloring pages, they seem to lower the price and increase the quality compared to the "student" class.) They lie down in smooth, even colors, as light or bright as you like (pencil pressure). The hexagonal shape makes them last longer than round pens. The core doesn't break, at least I haven't broken one yet. Compared to Prismacolor Primer, they have stronger colors, go on softer and actually blend better. (Maybe because FC uses vegetable oil instead of wax?) So far I've only used them with Prismacolors to get the detail faster and make fresh wet paint look. So for those familiar with colored pencils, this does in one pass what Prismacolors does in 4 or 5. I used them to get a color I don't have in the Prisma set. They also have interesting colors not found in other sets (gold, silver, copper). I think I'll use Prisma as a touch up and then layer them on top to get the finished look. My only complaint is that there is a consistency issue. Some colors, especially light ones, don't work as well as darker ones. Light colors seem to have a much harder core. That means more passes. Also, 48 colors is pretty limited. (Not a complaint, just an observation for a serious artist.) For the money I'm very happy with them and regret not finding them first.

Pros
  • With space for a name on each pen
Cons
  • Big and bulky
