Review on Samsung BD-E5700 Smart WiFi Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) by Jeff Drollinger

Terrible in every way.

First of all, Revain lists a firmware update on its website that will fix problems with this device. If you click on the link, this version is not in the list. No Google searches show that specific firmware version. I bought it because I thought installing this update would solve the problems. There have been some updates on power up and the firmware is supposed to be up to date but it doesn't look like the version mentioned on the Revain website! My goal was to use the Smart Hub features on this player rather than playing discs, so I can't comment on its performance with Blu-Ray. BUT as a smart (or rather dumb) hub, it's completely useless. It seems the machine can't handle what Netflix and Plex Media Server throw at it. it lags behind and always responds to the remote control. Also, these two apps have serious audio sync issues. It doesn't make sense to me that the $49 Roku could stream these apps with no issues. My reason for wanting the Smart Hub is that I prefer the Roku interface. I spend a fortune on Revain and have trusted their offerings. This is what frustrates me the most about this purchase. Why show off a firmware update that doesn't exist and convince customers it solves problems?

Pros
  • Region: Blu-ray: A, DVD: 1
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
