I'm not sure why some people don't like this HP DVD burner. But first let me tell you what I use it for. I buy a CD, then burn it onto a hard drive and then sell the CD back to a used CD dealer. Keeps my music collection at a lower cost and allows me to use MP3 etc. After burning 500 CDs onto my hard drive I started worrying about backups. I bought it and backed up my 500 MP3 CDs to DVD. All it took was 5. Five DVDs with a backup. It was very easy to use and did its job in the usual way. not the fastest in the world but it did what I wanted it to do. As it turned out, my external hard drive failed, but my music wasn't lost. So for my needs this unit paid for itself easily given the cost of buying back 500 CDs at $14-20 each. So judge for yourself. I use it to backup MP3s/data and it works like a champ. I haven't tried ripping DVD movies yet, but I really don't need to. a while.
