Review on Canson XL Series Newsprint Paper Pad: Charcoal and Pencil, 9x12, 100 Sheets by Carol Miller

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great pillow. for practice

There's a reason newspapers use a special type of paper, and that's because it's cheap to make. The reason this pad is so economical is because it's made from the same material, making it the perfect buy for aspiring artists. Note that jet black ebony pencils do not appear jet black on this paper, but rather a dark gray (HEX# 666666 or so), meaning your final product will not have the same quality as it would on thicker art paper. The quality of the newsprint is pretty good and the notebook itself feels well bound, but is fragile due to the light weight of the paper, so putting a cardboard box behind it is highly recommended. As for practicing your shapes (which are easy to follow on this paper - tracing shapes is good exercise for muscle memory, but DO NOT draw detailed shapes, just cut out shapes), lines or drawings of objects before tracing them try more appealing interfaces. More advanced artists should purchase a more expensive pad with higher quality paper as their drawings will be of reasonably better quality on them and tend to be more receptive to the shape of the drawings.

Pros
  • Ideal for use with charcoal and pencil
Cons
  • I'll write later
