Review on Dorman HELP 55101 Choke Conversion by Mike Rubenstein

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Contains the basic parts needed to convert to a hand throttle

I find it funny to see negative reviews because the kit doesn't quite fit. Most importantly, the kit contains the components needed to build a hand throttle and it takes a bit of ingenuity to make it work. First off, the universal mount that came with it didn't even come close to fitting in my car, nor was it strong enough to do the job. I bought a 5" angle mount and built my own stronger mount. Next, the cap was a little too big on the outer rim, so I undercut it a bit. Also, the opening in the lid was too narrow for the choke post, so I enlarged it slightly. After I installed it, it turned out that the lever that attaches to the cable was too short and required too much pressure to operate. If you don't have a direct shot into the carb, the cable will tighten. In my case the choke housing was on the passenger side of the car so I had to make a few bends. I simply used the discarded support bracket that came with the kit to extend the drive arm attached to the cable and everything worked smoothly. An important conclusion: without the kit, the work would be impossible. With the supplied parts you can convert it to a hand throttle with little effort. Do not buy this if you expect the kit to come out of the box with no modifications.
