I bought this and the Prisma set for my daughter and honestly expected to return one or the other, especially this one. Luckily, the Black Widow brand easily passed all the tests we put it through. No heat was applied, mainly because I wanted to see how they would work without modification. Pros: Lightweight but durable. The boy got his coveted red pencil and couldn't break it like he does any of his Crayola pencils. The sharpening (with the Prisma brand) worked well, however my old Blick brand sharpener ended up with a finer tip - speaking of the tip - with the right "staging" of the pencils it was able to create incredibly delicate details without the usual 5 minute breakage - Overall texture and application is smooth but not silky - Blending was amazing, especially when using the multiple thin layer technique with intermediate blending. The body and presentation are excellent. Ours was dented, but none of the pencils were affected, so I didn't touch them. Finally the most important thing. COLOR! The variety this little set offers is fantastic. The fat ones are bold while the muted ones are exactly how they should be. You may need to layer a bit, but you'll definitely get the click you want! - The grip on wood was exceptional. We did not notice any gaps, weaknesses or distortions. 😁 Cons ❌- The dent on the body didn't bother us, but it might be a problem for you, so be careful when examining it. Something as fragile as art pencils should never leave the manufacturer damaged. (It was packaged very well so I have to assume the damage happened before shipping.) - This is by no means a solution to spending an extra $300. However, this is not necessarily a negative. Just don't expect a set to last more than 4-5 months if you're actively painting or creating large, colorful details. I couldn't decide if it was good or bad with closed ends, but having to think about it I thought I'd throw it in here for those of you who want to see the inner connection. In general, this is an excellent balance of quality and quantity. The cool snake case is also a plus for my snake crazy kid! Whether you're a professional looking to take supplements or a part-time entertainer, I'm sure you'll be happy with your purchase.
