Review on ๐Ÿ”Œ Efficient 12V SLA Battery Charger: 1300mA with Short Circuit Protection by Robert Toomey

Revainrating 4 out of 5

This little charger does exactly what I need and does it well.

I don't usually give rave reviews but this little charger works great. I have several famous chargers that I use. However, there are times when they simply refuse to charge batteries whose voltage has dropped below a certain level. Sometimes such caution is warranted, but not always. In my case, I just replaced the batteries in the backup power supply for someone. After a few weeks, they noticed that the backup power supply was disconnected and would not turn on. It turned out that the emergency power supply itself had failed. It continued to run until the batteries died and stayed that way for several weeks. It's not good for SLA batteries, but it's not the end of the world either. Knowing the batteries were indeed brand new, I pulled them out to charge on my bench. I already know that as a precaution, my famous chargers will simply refuse to charge the batteries at such a low level. This is where this little gem of a charger shines. It's cautious but not paranoid. If the SLA's battery is very low and not shorted out, it will attempt to charge it. That's exactly what I had to do in this case. A few tips if you're trying to charge very low SLA (sealed lead acid) batteries! I'm not a profi. The following is not a manual... Use at your own risk! Only charge batteries that you know are in good condition. Defective or short-circuited batteries can explode! First tip: This charger gets very hot. The body is a simple press fit. He understands easily. Make a perforated, non-conductive case and point a fan at it...just to say...Hot electronics don't last long...Second tip: If you connect this charger to very low batteries, there will be a green signal light up as if the batteries were already charged. It is in order. It takes some time to bring a badly discharged battery back to life. Leave it for a while. Eventually, when the battery is really good, the indicator will turn red, which means it's charging. Now all you have to do is wait for the indicator to turn green again and everything is charged. Sometimes charging some batteries takes longer than usual. In this case I check the battery for physical signs of failure. If the battery is hot or the sides are swollen or deformed... STOP CHARGING IMMEDIATELY! The battery is defective. Label it as such and take it to a recycling center. If the battery feels cool or warm to the touch and the sides aren't swollen or deformed, I keep charging it. Before I do that, I unplug the charger and manually check it to see what the charge level is. I use the following tester for this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07759SLYP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Third tip: I had some batteries that seemed to want to charge forever. When I unplug them and check them they say they are 100% charged. Obviously something is wrong, otherwise they would have gotten the green light from the charger. I mention this because it can happen to you when using this charger. I don't know, something weird with the charger or the battery. Batteries don't warp or heat up during charging and they don't recharge, so I keep using them and they work fine.
