Review on Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine - Iron Frame, Stainless Steel Side Panels, 11.4" x 13.4 by Niropa Heinen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

My second Silvia for espresso machines

This is my second Rancilio Silvia. My previous device is V1 which I bought used. It still works, but I wanted to treat myself to a new device. Racilio Silvia is a solid machine made of stainless steel and off-the-shelf parts. Would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for some design issues. Obviously they aren't that bad as I bought another Sylvia. Tray capacity is too small. I have to empty mine almost every day to keep it from spilling onto my counter. It often splashes on me when I try to pick it up and take it to the sink to drain. It's just one of those things you don't think you're checking, and it's not obvious because it's covered by beams. The water tank is small. I keep a gallon jug by my car and fill it up almost every day. However, a few times a week it runs out of water mid-brew and I have to reset my portafilter and start over after priming the pump. It would be nice to have some sort of warning (light or buzzer) to remind the user to add water before the next brew. I would recommend this machine to die-hard espresso drinkers. It's not for beginners or the faint of heart, as it takes a lot of experimentation to make a decent cup of beer. Using fresh, fresh, fresh coffee is key to this machine. If you plan to shop at your local grocery store, you'll likely be disappointed with the results. This machine loves buttery soft, fresh beans and a consistent pounding technique.

Pros
  • I always liked it
Cons
  • Not as thick as the others
