Review on Uniden R1 Extreme Detector Degree by Patrick Hamilton

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great detector; lousy mount

I've had a Cobra RAD 450 and a Beltronics PRO 200 and the Uniden R1 outperforms both but I guess that's to be expected as the R1 costs significantly more than them. The problem I have with R1 is that the signal strength indicator is too small. Tracking the distance to a radar source relies heavily on audible alerts. Since my car has a stereo that is much more audible than the R1's horns, I had to buy a small amplified speaker to hear it. I bought a Uniden BC23A for this purpose and that solved the problem. The large mount that comes with the R1 is virtually useless if you're mounting it to anything other than a truck window with a very small angle, as the range of adjustment isn't enough to accommodate a steep-angle windshield. I was unable to adjust the mount to hold the detector level on my 2016 Fit due to insufficient reach of the mount. If you have a steeply sloped windshield, you'll need to use a small mount. I had issues with this mount not sticking to the window, but I solved this issue by cleaning the suction cups and mount with an alcohol-soaked cloth; it's been like this for a few days now and it looks like it's going to continue like this. I thought of deducting a star for the mount, but the detector is so cool I just couldn't justify it. If you want the performance of a more expensive detector at a lower price and don't mind shelling out the extra money, it's worth every penny.
