Is it as smooth as Kirk? no Is it smooth enough to work properly? Yes. A great ball head for the price. The controls are really impressive as they are smooth and snap firmly into place with minimal twisting. WARNING: All control knobs were locked in the fully open position and I could not turn them by hand when I first opened the box. I used a couple of channel locks (with a gasket) to turn them with a light push and unlocked them all. After that everything worked correctly.
