Review on SOMA 10-Cup Water Filter Pitcher: Pure and Refreshing Hydration for Healthy Living by Alexis Jordan

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Pretty but ineffective

I really wanted to like it - it's by far the prettiest water pitcher. They also sponsor a water charity that deserves admiration. But its performance leaves much to be desired. We had two main problems with it. First, it doesn't pour very well - the water tends to overflow and splatter all over the place unless you are very careful and careful when tipping it to pour, especially when trying to fill narrower water bottles. And the second and more important problem is, as many have pointed out, that the filter is probably one of the most unsatisfactory on the market in terms of its performance. Even on their website there is little information on what the filter does/how it works. Until recently, Soma was only certified for chlorine, taste and odor filtration. As others have noted, this filter scored the lowest in independent tests when it came to how much chlorine it filtered out. We haven't tested this ourselves, but our water (we already have a house filter, so a 3rd filtration) is tested very differently - and not optimal compared to the shave we used before. Also, after less than 3 months the plastic casing next to the spout on the outside turned pale yellow and although the water from the sink was a normal color the water in the jug became yellowish (seems to indicate the presence of iron - but not sure , where it might have come from). Soma appears to have recently received NSF 53 certification for copper and mercury to bring the filters a little closer to (or filter) most competitors' filters, but overall it's still basically a good-looking, low-performance filter. If you really want/need your water filtered, look elsewhere. We've replaced it with aquagear, which has been tested to filter all the usual suspects, as well as lead, fluorine, chromium-6, chlorine, chloramines, and industrial and agricultural effluent.

Pros

Cons
