XG270. Not the motion blur reduction king that was promised. (Updated)

If you don't use this monitor with Motion Blur Reduction (PureXP), then this review shouldn't bother you. If you want to use PureXP, pay attention to the quality control of the PureXP part of this monitor. I had to exchange twice before getting an acceptable monitor. The XG270 should be "Blur Busters approved" but the level of MBR crosstalk on this monitor is totally unacceptable and not worthy of Blur Busters certification. [UPDATE: This works better when replacing the block; see appendix below] Keep in mind that the image in the center of the screen looks best with reduced motion blur, and 120Hz is reputed to be the best spot on the XG270 monitor for the cleanest strobe image. I took a picture of my XG270 with PureXP enabled. to show motion blur reduction crosstalk from the CENTER of the screen, with the monitor refresh rate set to 120Hz and the alien movement speed set to 960 pixels per second. This is how it looks to the naked eye when an object moves on the screen. The object creates a very distracting double image that ruins the clarity of your viewing experience. Now imagine trying to play with this effect affecting everything on your screen. Crosstalk gets much worse when you tilt towards the top and bottom of the image. I've tried playing around with every possible display picture setting to try and fix this bad crosstalk. I also tried changing the refresh rate to 100Hz and 144Hz to see if there would be a difference, it didn't help. I downloaded the monitor driver and display controller from the Viewsonic XG270 software page. None of that helped. I am completely disappointed with the MBR performance of this monitor. This is not what was promoted at all. I've added a bonus highlight photo for those interested. I will try to exchange this unit for another one in case they send me a lemon. I will update this accordingly as things go. UPDATE: I got a spare, plugged it in and tested it in portrait mode. The blur reduction was MUCH cleaner than the previous block. I was very happy with it. I placed the monitor correctly and set it to landscape mode. When I looked again at the moving aliens, they looked like garbage again, like on the first monitor. This time, disabling and re-enabling PureXP fixed the issue. This was a bit strange because disabling and re-enabling PureXP on the first monitor I tested didn't fix anything. Beware of this problem. My guess is that if you enable PureXP and then change your display settings in any way, PureXP will not recalculate its blur reduction settings with your new display settings. You have to manually disable and re-enable PureXP every time you change your display settings or your image will look terrible. This is a hardware oversight and I hope they fix it with a firmware update. There are no firmware updates available for this monitor at the time of writing this review. Edit: Apparently this problem also occurs when I restart my computer. PureXP shows bad crosstalk when you restart your computer with PureXP enabled. This also happens when running CSGO in full screen or any source game. Turning the monitor on and off will also corrupt PureXP. This forces the user to power cycle PureXP VERY often just to get it working properly. PureXP is great when it works, but it's not very reliable on this monitor. ViewSonic should fix this problem. This time I've attached a full photo of the monitor with the blur reduction effect at work (same settings as before). I wouldn't say this monitor rivals the CRT in terms of motion clarity, but it's still very good. The center of the display is very sharp with little visible crosstalk. The top and bottom of the monitor have acceptable crosstalk for those areas of the screen. Here's another photo of the eruption for your enjoyment. Overall I'm reasonably happy with this monitor, but the unreliable PureXP bugs me. IPS colors are great. TN-like response time is fast. It has very good motion blur reduction (when it works). I hope ViewSonic releases a firmware update soon to fix this issue.
