Review on EPBOWPT DC 12V 24V To DC 5V 10A by Robert Toomey

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Mighty mouse. Give me 5 volts!

I have a very densely packed home file server that really pushes the limits of the case and power supply. In this server I have 36 HDS723030ALA640 Hitachi 3.5" hard drives and a Rosewill Tachyon 1000W PSU, while the Tachyon has a big fat 83A 12V rail. It only has an anemic 20A 5V rail. The HDS723030ALA640 draws 3W on the 5V rail and 7W on the 12V rail, which means 36 drives will overload the power supply by themselves (and they did). My solution was to buy 3 of these DC-DC converters, each connected to the 12V bus, providing independent 5V lines (which are powered from 83A 12V DC bus) 6 pin ATX/GPU input and 12 silicon-wired SATA power connectors on the other side (connected as with the original 12V power supply and 5V output.) on 12 HDS723030ALA640, with room for spare. BTW, I was very paranoid about using them in a computer application with dozens of very expensive hard drives, but after several tests with crappy EOL discs etc. I carefully monitored the output and then the output on the digital visor for spade/fun deals viewed and I finally got it into production. so tiny but so powerful. I love these converters!

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions
