It was great until it was.

Solar installation in our van. There was a great little charge controller/inverter. After about 2 months the plastic handles holding the cables came loose (although we didn't touch them. We only checked sometimes to make sure they were tight. Postiviye just fell off one fine day). No big deal, I just replaced them. Worked GREAT for about 8 months. We always had electricity and our battery was charged all the time. We enjoyed it very much. Then everything started to heat up. The fan ran constantly. So we checked our solar connections and everything was fine. We only have 3 x 100w panels charging a gel battery so nothing has changed in our setup. So we started monitoring its usage and only allowed charging when we were in the van. It's okay, we're in the van A LOT. Then, about a year later, we're driving down the street and everything shorts out. There was a bit of smoke, a smell of burnt plastic, and the bottom for our battery definitely made it. Where the bottom was burned, the buttons were melted, and the plastic around the negative pin that goes into the controller was also melted. Not sure if it's too hot or what, but I wouldn't recommend it for prolonged use. This is great if you occasionally use it under supervision. I'd spend a little more money and buy a larger device if you want to charge over 300W unattended. And again, until it was fried, it worked very, very well.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and bulky
