Worked great for a decorative gate through an internal staircase.
I used this latch on the gate at the top of my stairs. They are not meant to be heavy gates, they are just meant to keep the dog or small children off the stairs if I don't want them there. My latch had a fairly strong magnet and was easy to install. The magnet itself isn't childproof, so I hung it high up in front of the gate. I used it with spring loaded self closing hinges on the gate so everything closes automatically behind me. I have the feeling that the money is well spent.
