I bought a shorter version of this only to find the outside size of the receiver it went through was too thick to fit on. I put it on for a bit after Christmas and laughed to myself that I really hope it never sticks. Well in late February I went to the shoot and struggled to get the key in the cylinder and ended up pulling it out. And this despite the fact that the rubber sealing cap stayed in place the whole time. I picked up the handset and couldn't open it. I soaked it in a popular spray overnight, relocked the lock many times, and it seemed new again. I bought this to secure a decorative clutch cover that was left on the vehicle but I'm writing this now - I don't think the lock is meant to be used permanently - I've only used it when needed. I think I'll take a chance with a standard pin/cotter pin arrangement rather than finding a machine shop to cut the lock someday. Because you can lock your trailer on the ball, using this lock will prevent someone from coming in and detaching the ball from your vehicle, as well as reattaching the ball to its receiver and driving away. How are the chances? I think it depends on the cost of what you're transporting and how long the vehicle is left unattended and the trailer can be moved by hand - who knows.
