Review on 📬 PRIME-LINE S 4140 Mailbox Lock Replacement - Nickel Finish, ILCO 1003M Keyway, Opens Counter-Clockwise with 90º Rotation - Multipurpose Lock for Various Brands by Michael Bryan

Revainrating 2 out of 5

A good replacement for USPS cluster mailbox locks from the 90's, at least for a while.

I bought this lock to replace a worn out 1994 "HUDSON" mailbox. The keys were so worn that they had to be shaken in the lock to open them, and no one could make a key for it. it worked. This Prime-Line S 4140 lock was the closest to the original I could find. The lock body is identical to my original but the face is about 1/8 inch smaller in diameter. It fits well but you can see the ring around the new lock face where the original lock face kept the sun from fading. paint on the mailbox. Also, none of the cams that came with the new lock were identical to the cam on the original lock. Rather than see if one of the new cams would work I simply slipped the original cam over the body of the new lock and it fitted perfectly. Please note I had the same issue as the other reviewer when I didn't get the key could get out of the castle. I had already removed the pre-installed cam and installed the lock body into the door. I checked the lock to make sure I had the cam aligned correctly, but I couldn't get the key out in either position to see which position was locked and which was unlocked. I took the lock off and examined it but couldn't figure out why the key wasn't coming out. I installed the camera and then the bingo key slipped out but I have no idea why. I reinstalled the lock on the door and then installed the camera. The key is easy to insert and remove, the lock works perfectly. This weekend I'll try to make some extra keys and update the review if there are any problems. Update September 12, 2017: My mailbox finds the mailbox door open. No sign of tampering but the cam, lock washer and cam nut lay inside and outside of the mailbox. The threaded bolt for the cam just broke. The locking bolt and barrel are cast from one piece of "pot metal" and there isn't much material because the key goes right through where the nut is.

Pros
  • LOCK PROTECTION FUNCTION. This lock has a security feature that prevents the key from being removed when in the unlocked position, preventing key loss and ensuring the mailbox is locked every time it is used.
Cons
  • Band
