They compress "ONLY UNDER LOAD, NOT BY HAND "

These racks work great on my 2002 Suburban. Don't bother testing them by hand as they come under too much stand pressure. Install them and they go up and down with little effort. I noticed on the blog that a lot of people tried to test their spacers and thought they were broken because they won't compress when pressed by hand. Just a note
