Doesn't work and has serious problems

**Update** 2 weeks downgraded to 2 stars. So time doesn't work like others have said here. I was just trying to give my daughter more time and it just didn't work. I just got around the circle with the random mac address feature in windows. My daughter is only 10 years old and she is still sweet enough to ask for extra time. Though I'd actually be a little disappointed if she doesn't handle it herself at 12. Don't buy unless you have really obedient kids. It doesn't force anything and will actually give you more headaches than it solves. "I've used OpenDNS before, which is basically what Circle does, DNS ARP poisoning, which means acting as a name server for your devices and then redirecting requests after the rules have been applied. If you already have a way of doing this either through OpenDNS/Cisco Umbrella, Fing Box, or through an advertising funnel like PiHole, then don't worry about Circle as it's no better than any other and much more expensive. I have all of the above devices and services, so this is a pretty educated review. I gave 3 stars because there are serious issues that are easy to fix. I think the developers were lazy. First, HSTS issues are the biggest problem. Therefore, Circle only displays a certificate error instead of a client error page like Circle does on Netflix routers with Circle built-in. You will see the https certificate request so you can redirect to a custom page at this point if the block is imminent. However, you simply fail the request because someone is trying to hack your Chrome-served page. Then the whole problem is related to time, when you time blocks everyone is screwed. Your FAQ says it's coming from the phone settings, but my device is set to PST and the locks are in GMT/UTC. And you can't just change the time in the app, you'll have to completely delete your account and set it up again and hope the error doesn't take effect anymore. For a basic DNS funnel, it's not worth it, and I'd recommend people either buy PiHole for around $30, which also blocks all ads on your network, which Circle doesn't do. Or Fing box. It would be helpful to give us the ability to import blocklists as we could then also block ads from networks etc. So since it's a really basic DNS blocker that's overpriced, I'm only giving it 3 stars, and that's being generous. By the way, the application has only 2 settings. Add people and devices, that's all, for people you can add the time that applications can be used. However, again very simple. This device is made for moms and dads who are not at all tech savvy and need a really easy way to prevent their kids from accessing the internet. Note that this won't hurt tech-savvy kids as they can easily bypass it.

  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are more interesting options.
