Review on HighPoint Rocket 640L Lite - 4-Port PCI-E 2.0 x4 SATA 6Gb/s RAID Controller by Kyle Rose

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good for additional drive connections, poor performance RAID 1

First of all I would like to say that any performance issues I have had with this unit in terms of its actual inoperability were due to my own use. At the same time, Raid 1 performance on this thing is pretty terrible. Note that I only used mechanical drives with it (Western Digitial Red 2TB drives) so I'm not sure about the SSD's performance, but individual drive speeds were identical to the Intel controllers on the motherboard. Trying to put drives in RAID 1 with this controller will really degrade read speeds, which I really don't understand as Raid 1 is supposed to be faster since data can be read from any drive. The sequential read wasn't bad, but the random read was a lot slower than it should have been; useful but not ideal. After all, this was my first time using Windows disk storage and found it worked very, very well and this device worked very well for that. Since I haven't really used the raid function, I don't install the Marvell software separately from the driver, as it randomly accesses my main SSDs to write logs to them or something like that and it was wasted writing for HDDs, who just sit without a card raid. TLDR: The card works fine, just don't use it for Raid 1 unless they release some kind of firmware fix as it's slower than a simple software raid.
