Works great for what I need.

I am very happy with this purchase. I have an X79 motherboard and needed to add more HDDs and SSDs for video editing. Intel SATA3 works fine on my MB. SATA 2 is suitable for hard drives. The Marvell SATA3 ports on my MB suck. Sometimes they are much slower than SATA2 and I think that from a technical point of view they are very slow. (Yes, they have the latest drivers). So I bought it knowing I would only add 1 or 2 SSDs. I'm using Windows 10 and it was easy to install. I don't use it as a raid

Works well with Samsung 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512 512GB SSD

This HighPoint Rocket 640L just works - no problem with my system when I see it in the PCI-e X16 slot and double the speed get that I have on board SATA2. I highly recommend this controller if you are using it with a Samsung 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512 512 gig SSD. I can't comment on other SSD compatibility, but I suspect it will work with many, if not all. You also get 4 ports instead of 2 ports. For reference, see the review I wrote for the Apricorn Velocity Solo X2 Sata3 controller just below…

Good for additional drive connections, poor performance RAID 1

First of all I would like to say that any performance issues I have had with this unit in terms of its actual inoperability were due to my own use. At the same time, Raid 1 performance on this thing is pretty terrible. Note that I only used mechanical drives with it (Western Digitial Red 2TB drives) so I'm not sure about the SSD's performance, but individual drive speeds were identical to the Intel controllers on the motherboard. Trying to put drives in RAID 1 with this controller will really…

Pretty good non-Chinese SATA card for JBOD

The card works really well when installed properly. I installed with Windows 7 but I suspect it will work fine with Windows 10.1. The instructions that come with the card are pretty bad.2. Installation complexity mainly depends on your BIOS and motherboard type.3. Motherboards without UEFI BIOS should be easiest as the map will show up at boot time. Motherboards with UEFI BIOS are the most difficult to set up. Because the card's BIOS doesn't show up at boot. Install Windows 7 with UEFI BIOS: 1.

Actual 2 Lane PCIe Card

They plug into x4 PCIe slots but only use two lanes. Therefore, they should be advertised as x2 boards and not x4 boards. The maximum throughput of PCIe 2.0 with 2 lanes is 1 GB/s, which is half that of a 2 GB/s x4 card. This is quite sufficient for all conventional hard drives in existence today, the speed of which is around 150 MB/s at the fastest. However, this limits the performance of two or more fast SSDs, each of which can transfer data at over 500 MB/s. I am using a Sata II 4 drive…

Works great, but only with the right driver. Not for XP owners.

At first I thought I bought a lemon. My Win XP Pro machine refused to work with it and the MoBo SATA2 controller couldn't see my SSD drive. Tech support tells me that XP lacks the necessary AHCI support needed for the R640L card and SSD combo. Frustrating, but I decided to revert my Linux computer (failed experiment) back to Windows (continued failed experiment, but more useful). I installed Win 7 Pro and was frustrated again with a broken controller and invisible SSD. After repeated slow…

Do not confuse Rocket 640L with RocketRAID 640L or you will regret it.

I made the mistake of confusing the Rocket 640L HBA (this product) with the RocketRAID 640L HBA, which is what I wanted. The screenprinted text on the front of the Rocket 640L says both, so no wonder I'm confused. But the maps are different. The Rocket 640L uses software provided by the chip manufacturer (Marvell) and does not have or need a Windows driver as it appears to be an AHCI compliant device. That's good if you want a plug-in-play solution, but bad if you want to manage your RAID…
