Review on Dayco 89356 Automatic Tensioner Assembly by Donnie Boss

Revainrating 5 out of 5

2006 Corolla Belt Tensioner

The serpentine belt tensioner assembly sold by Dayco is identical to the Toyota OEM tensioner, with the same numbers and "Slovakia" on the metal body. The box said it was made in Germany but the unit was stamped in Slovakia so I'm guessing it was assembled in Slovakia with German made parts. the same mileage. In fact I'm disappointed that it didn't last as long as it takes a lot of work to remove as the replacement requires lifting the motor to allow the main mounting bolt to dislodge the frame. So think about the job before you accept this job. Toyota did a very poor job on the design as a shorter bolt could easily have been used. As a diagnostic tool, before removing the tensioner, gently pull off the rubber boot on the hydraulic shock absorber and check for oil leakage. then it must be replaced. Typically, the first sign of trouble is belt squeaking and/or unit knocking/clicking. Only the hydraulic damper can be replaced (unless you have the experience, tools or desire to jack up the engine) as the bearing on the pulley was still very smooth with no lateral play. But you still need to buy a tensioner as I couldn't find just a damper. By the way, this job would cost about $300 if you did it at a Toyota dealership and probably less at an independent shop.
