Some people have commented negatively on this unit so I bought this and another type just in case. The other one hasn't arrived in the mail yet, so I don't know how good it is, but this one works really well. I was a little confused about how to put the batteries in or how much to use, but it's really easy. You open the cover twice clockwise or counterclockwise (it doesn't matter) to open the battery cover. There is a small diagram on the cover showing the direction in which to insert the batteries. You insert all 4 batteries. It took me a few tries to get them right, but no big deal. After that, press the button to activate the sensor. When you release the button, the device turns off. I know nothing about magnets. I was just playing around because I ran into a wall on another unrelated project, but this detector shows very clearly which side of the battery is facing north and which is facing south.
